ATTORNEY BIOGRAPHY

Mr. LaChance specializes in appellate practice, commercial litigation, securities litigation, white collar crime and arts and entertainment law. His practice is informed by a varied academic background. Mr. LaChance received a B.A. in classical and medieval history from Utah State University, an M.A. in philosophy from Arizona State University-where his research focused on logic and the philosophy of science-and a J.D. from the University of Arizona.

Mr. LaChance offers unparalleled research experience and exceptional writing skills, which he acquired from years of scholarly research and publishing. As a graduate student, he worked as an editorial assistant for two academic journals: The International Journal of Organic Evolution and Philosophical Studies. Additionally, in law school, Mr. LaChance was the articles editor for the Arizona Journal of International and Comparative Law. The journal's editorial board recognized his editorial work, awarding him the Laura Hubbard 110% award in 2001. As a law student, Mr. LaChance worked as a research assistant, focusing on criminology and the economic analysis of law. He was a member of the University of Arizona's Program on Law, Philosophy and Social Theory. Mr. LaChance independently researched issues affecting corporate governance, which culminated in his published paper, Nature vs. Nurture: Evolution, Path Dependence and Corporate Governance. That paper won the American Bar Association's Mendes-Hershman award for writing on business law and the University of Arizona's Kozolchyk award for best published student paper. After law school, Mr. LaChance refined his legal writing as a judicial clerk for The Honorable Susan Ehrlich at the Arizona Court of Appeals.

Mr. LaChance draws on this experience to write well-researched and powerfully argued motions and appellate briefs. He drafted and argued most of the motions in the Baptist Foundation criminal fraud case. Indeed, Mr. LaChance drafted a post-trial motion in that case which resulted in an acquittal on two fraud counts. In addition to his trial work, Mr. LaChance has filed briefs with the Arizona Court of Appeals, the Arizona Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. His appellate practice touches upon several areas of law, including breach of contract, real property, fraud, unfair competition, economic and dignatory torts, criminal procedure and municipal law.

Aside from his legal practice, Mr. LaChance works as a free-lance writer. He writes about popular culture, food, literature and politics. He is currently working on a piece on the Baptist Foundation case. Mr. LaChance is also a film critic for a local Phoenix newspaper. His work in film gives him a unique perspective on the film industry, which makes him an essential part of the firm's arts and entertainment practice.
